Innovation at Alfa
Innovation isn't just for our benefit: it's through innovation that we’ve been able to open-source some of our tooling, and share some of our internally written utilities with customers.

Innovation is at the heart of what we do at Alfa. In addition to our annual Hackathon and regular innovation events, everyone benefits from dedicated investment budget to kick-start their ideas, and a coaching network to drive them forwards.
Innovation principles
Innovation at Alfa is more than processes or events. It's a mindset that shapes how we solve problems, let great ideas grow and create lasting value for our customers and colleagues.
These six principles guide how we innovate every day.

Curiosity is where innovation begins. We ask questions, explore new angles and stay open to what we don't yet know. By challenging assumptions and seeking to better understand the problems we solve, we uncover opportunities that might otherwise be missed.
We welcome diverse perspectives, challenge our own thinking, and stay receptive, especially when things feel unfamiliar. We challenge our own thinking, question assumptions and integrate feedback meaningfully.
The best ideas rarely happen in isolation. We work together, involve others early and create where anyone can contribute and lead. By sharing ownership and learning from one another, ideas become stronger and deliver greater impact.
Progress comes from trying new things. We test ideas early, learn quickly and recognise that every experiment, successful or not, teaches us something. By embracing experimentation, we build confidence in what works and learn from what doesn't.
Innovation is an ongoing journey rather than a single milestone. Every iteration, whether it leads to a successful outcome or a valuable lesson, brings useful insight. We support ideas with a clear path to evolve, not just launch.
We balance ambitious thinking with practical action. By connecting today's ideas to our long-term strategy, we can make meaningful progress while remaining focused on the future.

Innovation Days at Alfa
Innovation is a continuous process. However, Alfa also regularly hosts dedicated innovation events across the year for staff to come together and enjoy. These events represent an exciting opportunity for collaborative innovation, outside the bounds of business-as-usual teams; for all of us to take a step back from our work and get involved in new ideas, initiatives and opportunities at Alfa - to scratch that itch, learn something new, or try out that idea.
"Before you make innovation happen, you have to make it possible. This means establishing a framework that makes people feel comfortable to innovate, and making it clear that innovation is something you want and need in your business. If you provide a democratic, inclusive environment and invite a group of motivated people to go and get on with it, then you see the best bottom-up ideas and the biggest chance of success."

Building innovation teams
During innovation days, teams are formed not by geography or hierarchy, but by passion for the projects and problems they are trying to address. From integrating novel IoT devices with our enterprise application, to revolutionising the way we interact with our customers and define their business needs, to building a notification widget to let everyone know when the free coffee bar is closing. It’s all up to the individual and, if the ideas aren’t there yet, people can join one of our brainstorming exercises, discussing and working on exciting problems posed by key areas of the business.
Hackathons

Hackathons are hugely popular events and the bedrock of the innovation culture at Alfa. They are a time for everyone to work on something new; be that an enhancement to Alfa, our internal tooling, improving an existing process or even a new sustainability initiative.
Hackathons are held annually across our regions, giving colleagues dedicated time away from their day-to-day responsibilities to focus on innovation. Teams work together over two half-day sessions, supported throughout by our innovation team, before presenting their ideas to the wider company.
Each year, Hackathon categories are aligned to Alfa's strategic priorities and innovation principles, giving teams a clear focus for developing ideas that support our customers and our organisation. In 2026, the teams explored ideas across these themes:
- Strengthen: Grow our differentiation of market-leading people, product and delivery
- Sell: Ideas that help create value for customers and support sustainable business growth
- Scale: Increase our capacity for developing and delivering Alfa Systems, and extend our reach
- Simplify: Ideas that reduce complexity and improve efficiency
The competition is decided through a two-minute presentation from each team to the wider Alfa community. The winning teams are selected through a combination of company-wide voting and input from our CLT. This is followed by a prize-giving ceremony to award the winning teams in each category, as well as the overall Hackathon winner.
We’ve had some amazing things come out of previous Hackathons which are now considered part and parcel of our day-to-day life at Alfa. Past winners include a 24/7 billing process and the use of Alfa configuration combinations as code.
Innovation that becomes reality
Our innovation programme allows the best ideas to evolve, be tested and developed into real capabilities, whether they improve how we work at Alfa or deliver greater value for our customers.
Here are some of the capabilities that started as innovation initiatives and have been brought to life.

The Alfa innovation process
The Alfa Innovation process is our take on Lean Innovation, an established approach to innovation within a company or industry. It represents the way for our employees to take their innovation ideas forward in a funded and supported way, for eventual adoption by the company.
One of our most successful projects to make it through the Alfa Innovation process has been Alfa Astra - an automated code refactoring tool which we’ve since open-sourced - sharing this powerful tool with the wider tech community.
